WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle ease into the next round of the FA Cup, while wins also for Saltash United and Oak Villa

PLYMOUTH Argyle will face Welsh side Gwalia United at home in the second round of the Women’s FA Cup after seeing off Maidstone United 7-0 on Sunday in the first round.

The Pilgrims’ next tie against their FANWL Southern Premier Division rivals is due to be played on Sunday, November 23.

Argyle had no problems seeing off lower league Maidstone at Home Park at the weekend.

Captain Panagiota Papaioannou got them underway with a fine header from a Roisin Kivel free-kick in the 18th minute.

And three minutes later, Argyle doubled their lead when Ellie Noble beat defenders and the goalkeeper to a ball before sending the ball high into the net.

The home side then added two goals within the space of a minute to take a 4-0 half-time lead.

The first came from Stephens who fired in after Phoebie Poole, Charlotte Whitmore and Noble had all seen shots blocked.

Then from the restart, Stephens did well before putting a ball in for Whitmore to score.

Stephens bagged her second of the afternoon four minutes after the break after a clever free-kick from Kivel.

Whitmore and Noble then also added second goals. Whitmore pinched the ball off Maidstone after a Caitlin Smith long ball had caused problems, and Noble produced a smart finish after a good cross from Katie Dickson.

In the South West Women’s League, Saltash United claimed a much-needed away win as they beat Frampton Rangers 1-0 thanks to a goal by Bethany Prouse.

In the Devon Women’s League Cup, Rachel Finch bagged four goals as SB Oak Villa overcame lower league Elm United 7-0 at Manadon.

Rebecca Coutts, Kiri Pethick and Saskia Brisley were also on the scoresheet for Villa, who had led 3-0 at the break.

In the Devon Women’s League South & West Division, Horrabridge Rangers stay top after they beat Lakeside Athletic 13-1 at Fillace Park.

Vicky Jasper claimed the player of the match award with five of Horrabridge’s goals.

Toni Allen and Kirsty Jones both scored twice for the home team, while Kerry Gibbings, Freya Veevers, Leah Parnell-Moses and Leesa Grainger also netted. Aaliyah Mcadam scored for Lakeside.

In an entertaining game, Drake FC beat Plymouth True Blues 6-5.

Alice O’Hare (2), Eleanor Cranch, Cerys Morgan, Emma Guest and Aimee Sharples scored for Drake, with Angel Goucher (2), Maisie Allison, Natalia Kondrat and Jessica Welch replying for True Blues.

Roxanne Byrne scored a hat-trick as Elm Fusion overcame Tavistock 6-1. Lauren Hewings, Rachel Javan and Michelle McGuire were also on target for Fusion, with Kimberley Benny netting for Tavistock.
