WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle hit nine against Billericay, while Marine Academy claim away draw

PLYMOUTH Argyle claimed their biggest league win in more than seven years as they trounced Billericay Town 9-0 at Home Park on Sunday in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division.

The new-look Pilgrims were 6-0 up at half-time and then added three more to claim their first 9-0 league victory since beating Cheltenham Town by the same score in May 2018.

Layla Proctor was the star of the show for Argyle, bagging four of their goals. She had never previously even scored a hat-trick.

Charlotte Whitmore and Phoebie Poole netted twice for the Greens, with Eleanor Noble adding their other.

After three games, Argyle sit in fourth place, having won both their home fixtures so far.

The Pilgrims made a great start on Sunday, with five goals in the opening 25 minutes.

Proctor scored the first two, both coming from corners, before Whitmore fired in after Poole had seen a shot saved.

Proctor then completed her goalscoring afternoon with another quickfire two – one from a set-piece and one when she reacted quickly after the goalkeeper had spilled the ball.

Noble scored Argyle’s final goal of the first half with a stunning long-range strike.

After the interval, Whitmore chipped in for her second before Poole also bagged a brace with two well-worked goals in front of more than 1,000 supporters at Home Park.

Meanwhile, Marine Academy Plymouth returned home with a point from their long trip to Abingdon United in FAWNL Division One South West.

Newly-promoted Marine Academy drew 2-2 on their travels after twice coming from behind.

Anais Harris-Beechers put the home side ahead, but Kelsey Blight responded for Marine Academy.

Just after half-time, Erin Hartigan put Abingdon back in front, but Marine Academy again came back with Carmen Morison scoring their second.

Marine Academy and Plymouth Argyle are due to replay their League Cup game at Ivybridge on Thursday.

The original fixture had to be abandoned after Argyle’s Lulu Jarvis suffered a serious leg injury when the Pilgrims were 3-0 up.
