YOUNG athletes from Plymouth and Tavistock starred for Devon at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Birmingham on Friday and Saturday.

Coombe Dean pupil Annabelle Fasuba (City of Plymouth AC) and Tavistock College’s Tegan Brown (Tavistock AC) both won their second individual English Schools’ titles, while Fasuba also won a relay gold this year.

There were also individual medals for City of Plymouth AC athletes Rory Summers, Nubia Evans-Shields, Adam Dingley and Nicolas Maczugowski.

Fasuba produced one of the performances of the two-day event, by smashing a 36-year-old championship record and equalling Katharine Merry’s under-15 200m all-time UK best, which had stood since 1989.

The Plymouth youngster, who only turned 14 three weeks ago, ran a sensational time of 23.72 seconds to take the junior girls’ 200m victory, having won the 100m in the same age group last year.

Her time on Saturday is inside the European U20 Championship qualifying mark, although Fasuba is too young to compete. It also ranks her in Europe’s top five under-18 athletes, despite having four more years at that age group.

After her individual performance she then ran the second leg in Devon’s junior mixed relay team and helped them to a gold medal with a 45.98 second run.

Amazingly, Fasuba was not the only Devon junior girl sprinter to smash a championship record and set a British best mark as Totnes student Isla Perry did the same in the 300m. The pair had finished first and second in the 100m at the Devon Schools’ Championships last month (pictured).

Brown, meanwhile, also won her second English Schools’ title by taking victory in the intermediate girls’ hammer, having won the junior age group two years earlier.

Brown threw 53.81m to take gold ahead of Kent’s Tilly Ryan.

Fellow Tavistock College hammer thrower Hazel Stead, who was junior girls’ champion last year, had to settle for seventh place this time in her first year in the older age group with a throw of 47.43m.

Plymouth College’s Nubia Evans-Shields, who has previously won three English Schools’ discus titles, had to settle for silver this year in the senior girls’ competition with a throw of 42.59m. She was just beaten by Surrey’s Gabriella Tcheukam.

There was also a silver medal for Mount Kelly’s Summers (City of Plymouth AC). He knocked half a second off his PB with a run of 48.15 seconds to claim his first English Schools’ podium placing in the senior boys’ 400m behind Surrey’s Frederick Hake.

Another athlete to win his first English Schools’ medal and set a new PB was sprint hurdler Adam Dingley (Plymouth CC/City of Plymouth AC).

Dingley took bronze in a highly-competitive senior boys’ 110m hurdles final with a 14.16 second run. He was only 0.04 of a second off second place. The title went to his Devon team-mate Joshua Taylor, who won in 13.78 seconds.

Tavistock College’s Maczugowski (City of Plymouth AC) claimed his third successive English Schools’ medal by taking bronze in the senior boys’ 400m hurdles with a 54.01 second run. The race was won by Rayhan Mourtada, who just edged out Trinidad & Tobago international Cheyne West.

Fellow Tavistock College athlete Phoebe Milburn just missed out on picking up another English Schools’ medal in the senior girls’ hammer, but she did claim a top five placing, while Tavistock AC team-mates Ella Paterson (Somerset) and Louisa Hess (Mount Kelly) came 13^th and 14^th, respectively in the same competition.

There was a seventh place finish for Tavistock College’s Sasha Kilbane in the junior girls’ hammer competition in her first English Schools’ Championships. She threw 38.88m, while Ivybridge Community College’s Owen Fileman (Tavistock AC) came eighth in the senior boys’ hammer with 49.51m.

Another Tavistock AC thrower Evie Palmer (Mount Kelly) came 12^th in the intermediate girls’ javelin event with 35.16m, while Devonport High School’s Barnaby Basterfield was eighth in the junior boys’ triple jump with 11.43m.

Mount Kelly’s Freddie Whybrown (Tavistock AC) had a hectic weekend as he had to run two 1,500m in boiling hot conditions in two days. He qualified from the heats to reach the final with a 4:17.30 run before going faster in the final with a 4:16.55 effort to take 10^th place.

Devonport High School for Girls’ Elsie Goodspeed (City of Plymouth AC) just could not quite make the final of a hotly-contested junior girls’ 800m event, but she did run a PB time of 2:16.99 in the heats.

In the intermediate boys’ 100m, Coombe Dean’s David Oldfield (City of Plymouth AC) finished 12^th overall in the heats with 11.21, while Devonport High School’s Bryan Oldfield (City of Plymouth AC) clocked 22.67 seconds in the heats of the 200m in the same age group.

Tavistock AC’s Charlotte Doney competed for Cornwall and she finished 13^th in the intermediate girls’ discus event with 29.35m.
