Plymouth athlete Evans-Shields will compete for England at indoor meeting in Sweden

CITY of Plymouth’s UK junior number one discus thrower Nubia Evans-Shields has earned another international call-up.

Evans-Shields has been named as part of the England Athletics team that will head to Sweden to compete at the 2025 Vaxjo Throws International at the end of this month.

It will be the third year running that the Plymouth College student has competed for England at the rare indoor throwing meeting. The event has previously proved a successful meet for the teenager.

She is one of 15 up-and-coming England throwers who will be heading to the meeting where they will come up against rivals from Sweden, Iceland and Norway.

England Athletics say they have selected athletes aiming for a spot in the European Under-20 and Under-23 Championships this summer.

“We’ve assembled a strong group of throwers who are eager to perform in what promises to be an exciting, inspiring, and exceptional event,” said England team leader Katie Lambert.

“It’s crucial to provide our pathway throwers with international competitions and learning opportunities like this one.

“The experiences they gain as part of teams like this will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for future age group and senior championships.”

Evans-Shields has dominated the UK rankings since under-13 level and has won three English Schools’ titles and represented both England and Great Britain under-20s.

The talented thrower has already accepted an athletics scholarship at Utah State University, which she will take up in the autumn.
