GALLERY: Inaugural women’s rugby match between Plymouth Combination and Plymouth Academicals ends in a draw

THE first representative women’s rugby match between the Plymouth Combination and the Plymouth Academicals ended in a 19-19 draw at Brickfields on Friday evening.

Players from Plymstock Oaks, Devonport Services and Plymouth Argaum featured in the Combination side, while the Academicals are made up of the best players from the University of Plymouth, Marjon University and the Peninsula Medical School.

The Academicals got off to a tremendous start with winger Evie Scutt scoring after just 40 seconds with a brilliant run down the right wing. She also added the conversion to put her side 7-0 up.

The Combination side did take a bit of time to settle but they pulled a try back on 10 minutes when Hannah Pomfret powered over following a tap penalty after earlier pushing the Academicals off a scrum.

The Combination XV then went in front on 17 minutes when Plymstock flanker Rose Taylor scored from another tap penalty and Rhiannon Dumper added the conversion.

But the students came back and the speedy Scutt added a second try after a turnover, which she also converted to put her side 14-12 up at the break.

The Academicals extended their lead after the interval when centre Sophie Meehan scored in the left corner.

However, six minutes later the Combination pulled level when Services’ Hannah Lumley touched down and Dumper added the conversion.

Both sides looked for a winning score but they could not be separated.
