League title winners Devonport Services look to end a successful season with cup success

DEVONPORT Services will be looking to complete a league and cup double on Saturday when they host Exmouth at the Rectory in the final of the Devon Senior Cup.

Services won the historic trophy for the first time in their history last year when they beat Brixham in a thrilling final.

That proved to be a springboard for them to go on and win Regional One South West this season, which means they will now be promoted to the National League.

But they are keen to end such a successful campaign with another piece of silverware on Saturday.

“We’d love to do the double,” said head coach Ben Russell.

“I think the difference from last year to this, is that last year we went in as underdogs, but this time we are probably going in as favourites due to what has happened in the league.

“However, we went to Exmouth just four or five games ago and we only beat them 20-17 and it should really have been a draw, but they went for the win.

“They are going to have their strongest team out, so it should be a cracking game and we’re looking forward to it.

“I think the team that defends better will win the game as both teams can attack.”

He added: “It is a lovely way to end the season having a home cup final and then it’s a case of chill before it all starts again. And it doesn’t just start again, it starts again in a very tough league above.”

Services have not lost at home this season, but they will not be underestimating Exmouth after they beat Brixham away in the second leg of the semi-final to book their place in Saturday’s showpiece.

Devonport are boosted by the return of Harrison Coonick, Mike Rickard and Aiden Taylor from injuries, but they are without Freddie Davies, who has joined the marines, and Andy Pond, who is still struggling with a knee injury.
