Athletes impress in season opener at Yeovil, while Ezra-Ham claims Fast Friday 10k victory

SEVERAL of the region’s top young athletes opened their outdoor seasons at the two-day Yeovil Spring Open meeting.

Rory Summers, Nicolas Maczugowski and Ella Patterson all made winning starts to life at under-20 level.

Summers ran a new personal best of 49.87 seconds to win the 400m flat, while Maczugowski clocked 56.25 seconds to take victory in the 400m hurdles.

Patterson finished as first under-20 woman in the hammer with a new 4k PB of 41.32m, while she also came second in the discus with 26.38m.

Her Tavistock team-mate Josh Tyler took victory in the senior men’s shot with 15.06m, while he was also second in the discus with 28.34m.

Another Tavistock thrower, Charlotte Doney came second in the under-17 girls’ discus with 28.37m having just moved up to that age group, while Isabelle Doney came third in the under-15 girls’ discus with 24.00m.

City of Plymouth’s Adam Dingley opened his season by finishing second in the under-18 110m hurdles in 14.49 seconds.

Away from the track, Tamar Trotters’ Bex Ezra-Ham claimed victory in the women’s race at the Fast Friday 10k at Exeter, while Tavistock’s Ben Neale was runner-up in the men’s race.

Ezra-Ham won in a gun-time of 36.31 minutes (chip-time 36.30), which was more than a minute ahead of any of her rivals.

Tavistock’s Charlotte Walker did make the top 10 with a 41.06-minute run (chip 41.04). She was also first under-20, with City of Plymouth’s Molly Gilbey second and her sister Hannah Walker third.

Neale came second behind Exeter Harriers’ Simon Fox in the men’s race with a time of 32.15 minutes.

City of Plymouth’s Kairn Stone was in the top 10 and was second M45 with a 34.36-minute run (34.35).

Erme Valley’s Alison Engledew took the F65 title, while Tavistock’s Richard Drage claimed the men’s crown in that age group.

Erme Valley’s Kate Medlicott was second F55, while Plymouth Musketeers’ Damian Dunne was third M50 and Erme Valley’s Ken Summers was third M70.
