Rugby clubs to mark festive period with annual games

A NUMBER of rugby clubs in the region will be holding festive matches on Boxing Day and December 27.

The annual meeting between Plymouth Argaum and OPMs, which dates back nearly 90 years, will take place at Bickleigh Down on Boxing Day at 11am.

Like last year, the plan is to play ‘suitable quarters’ based on experience, age and who turns up.
Argaum have won the fixture for the last two years. Anyone interested in playing can just turn up at 10am.

Also on Boxing Day, Saltash will play traditional festive opponents St Boniface College Old Boys (kick-off 11am).

The Boxing Day fixture has been going since 1977 and both sides are expected to be strong with plenty of well-known players on show.

The bar at Moorlands Lane will be open from 10am on the day.

Plymstock Albion Oaks and Tavistock will be playing inter-club fixtures on Boxing Day.

Oaks are holding President’s XV v DOR XV games for their men’s and women’s sides. The matches will start at 12noon, with the bar open at 11am.

Players can register for the games via the club’s social media.

Tavistock will play their annual ‘Locals v Legends’ game at Sandy Park on 12.30pm. The last two Boxing Day games have ended in draws.

Meanwhile, on December 27, Devonport Services will be holding an inter-club match between under-50 caps and over-50 caps at the Rectory on 1pm.

The under-50 cap team will be led by Iain Nichols with Matt Anstis leading the over-50 cap side.
