WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Plymouth Argyle boosted by big home league win

PLYMOUTH Argyle have moved five points clear of the relegation zone in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division after a much-needed 5-1 home win over bottom side London Bees on Sunday.

The comprehensive victory at Coach Road ended a run of three successive defeats for the Pilgrims.

The Bees actually started the better but gradually Argyle got into the game and four minutes before half-time they took the lead when Charlotte Whitmore went around the visiting goalkeeper and slotted the ball home.

And it got better for the Pilgrims in first half injury-time when Ellie Sara fired home to give her side a 2-0 lead at the break.

After the interval Taya Pomfret added a third after a cross by Katie Dickson before Sara bagged her second of the match.

Rebecca Dandridge, who had played a crucial role in Sara’s second, then finished off the scoring in the 80th minute with a powerful shot from the edge of the box.

In the South West Women’s League Premier Division, leaders Marine Academy Plymouth were beaten 3-2 away by third-placed Bristol Rovers.

Marine Academy paid for a slow start. They trailed 2-0 at the break and then went 3-0 down before making a comeback with a fine strike by Lily Hamp and a penalty from Samantha Drewery.

In the same division, Liskeard Athletic enjoyed a 3-0 away victory over bottom side Frampton.

Ellie Bishop gave Liskeard the lead in the first half before Chloe Williams and Jasmine Allen added further goals after the interval.

In the South West Western Division, Saltash United drew 0-0 away at Feniton.

In the Devon Women’s League South & West Division, leaders Horrabridge Rangers beat Paignton Villa 8-0 away. Evelyn Bray bagged four of Horrabridge’s goals, with Chardonnay James, Kirsty Jones, Jess Oaten, Leah Parnell-Moses also on the scoresheet.

In the same division, Hunters District went down 5-0 away at Plainmoor.

In the cup, SB Oak Villa were handed a walkover by Shaldon, while Lakeside were also handed a walkover by Hemyock. Elsewhere, Marjon forfeited their cup game away at Appledore.
