ATHLETICS: Edwards wins European Masters title, while Tavistock athletes shine at Throws Bonanza

PLYMOUTH-based athlete and coach Neal Edwards has become a European Masters champion.

Edwards took gold in the M50 400m hurdles event at the championships in Pescara, Italy.

The Royal Navy athlete clocked a season’s best time of 60.10 seconds to hold off the challenge of Spain’s Santiago Mascarague Crespo, who clocked 60.22.

The pair were two seconds ahead of the rest of the field, with France’s Mickael Rince taking bronze in 62.48 seconds.

Edwards, who coaches a host of City of Plymouth sprinters and hurdlers, had won bronze in the same event at last year’s World Masters Championship.

Meanwhile, a host of Tavistock AC athletes made their mark as the club hosted their end-of-season Throws Bonanza.

Charlotte Doney moved up the under-15 discus rankings to ninth with a personal best throw of 31.15m. She also won her age group shot with a PB of 7.38m and came second the weight throw (WT) and third in the hammer and javelin.

Fellow U15 thrower, Orla White also set a new PB in the discus. She threw 28.39m to move up to 17th in the UK.

Isabelle Doney was third in that U15 discus with 21.43m. She also set a PB in the hammer with 24.47m and came third in the weight throw.

Hazel Stead won the U15 hammer with 35.47m. She is ranked 16th in the country. She also won the weight throw (13.03m), came second in the javelin (22.45m) and shot (6.96m) and fourth in the discus (20.30m).

Nell Maguire won the U15 javelin with 22.45m and came second in the shot.

England U18 international Phoebe Milburn, who is ranked second in the UK, continued her impressive hammer season with victory in the under-17 event with 51.02m. She also won the U17 shot (9.61m), the weight throw (13.86m) and javelin (21.06m) and came second in the discus (21.23).

Louisa Hess, ranked 12th in the UK, was second in the hammer with 43.30m and team-mate Ella Patterson, also in the UK’s top 15, was third with 41.24m. Patterson also won the U17 discus (26.15), came second in the weight throw and third in the shot and javelin.

Also in the U17 age group, Katelyn Milburn came second in the shot and javelin and third in the weight throw.

Hannah Walker set a new PB to finish second in the U20 hammer with 34.53m. She also won the U20 weight, shot and javelin and came third in the discus. Her sister, Charlotte Walker, was second in the discus with 21.37m.

In the U13 age group, Jack Beilby won the javelin with 25.79m, while Mabel Maguire won all her events.
