Plymouth’s McCabe claims yet another European Junior Diving Championship medal

PLYMOUTH’S Euan McCabe continued his impressive record of winning medals at the European Junior Diving Championships by picking up a synchronised bronze on Tuesday evening in Croatia.

McCabe teamed up with Leon Baker in the boys’ A/B three-metre synchro event in Rijeka.

In an incredibly tight final, less than one point separated the top three teams, with the Ukrainian pair of Kyrylo Azarov and Masksym Mirza just edging victory with 299.49 points.

Italy’s Matteo Santoro and Matteo Cafiero narrowly bagged silver with 299.34 points, with McCabe and Baker agonisingly just behind with 298.53 points for Great Britain.

“This is our debut competition working together and what a result,” said Baker afterwards.

McCabe had also won medals at the 2022, 2021 and 2019 European Junior Diving Championships. However, in Croatia he is concentrating on the three-metre springboard. He will dive in the individual competition on Thursday.

Meanwhile, fellow Plymouth diver Amelie Underwood just missed out on a medal on Tuesday.

Underwood had finished fifth in the three-metre event on Sunday, missing out on the podium by six points.

She went one better in the one-metre final on Tuesday, agonisingly finishing fourth and less than five points off the podium.

On Sunday, Plymouth’s Oliver Heath won Great Britain’s first gold medal at the championships in the boys’ B one-metre event. He will dive again in the one-metre competition on Thursday.
