RMA Gig Club ready to hold their winter regatta at Mount Batten

The RMA Gig Club, assisted by RM Tamar Gig Club and Yealm Gig Club, will be holding their 2023 Winter League Regatta on Saturday at the Mount Batten Watersports Centre.

The RMA Gig Club is a specialist branch of RMA -The Royal Marines Charity, and its objectives are to promote, teach, and facilitate the sport of Cornish pilot gig rowing.

The regatta is expected to attract more than 120 rowers from Devon and Cornwall competing in 32-foot traditional gigs.

There will be eight races, from juniors through to super vets, with the first event starting at 10am.

The event is free to watch and will help raise funds for the gig club and RMA – The Royal Marines Charity.

RMA Gig Club chairman David Brain said: “This is going to be a fantastic day at Mount Batten, bringing together rowers from different clubs for a day of friendly competition and sportsmanship.

“Our regatta also aims raise the profile of both the RMA Gig Club and our charity, RMA – The Royal Marines Charity.

“We hope the day will be enjoyed by everyone attending and we welcome spectators of all age.

“Our club was formed in 2019 and is open to all serving and retired members of the RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, veterans from all of the services and civilians wanting to share our love of a great sport. We welcome interest from potential new club members who are inspired to give our wonderful sport a try.”

A cash raffle raising funds for RMA Gig Club will be drawn at 3pm. There will also be RMA – The Royal Marines Charity collection pots for donations to the charity.

Refreshments will be available for purchase and facilities provided by Mount Batten Watersports Centre.
