GALLERY: RAF Spitfires fly high at South Devon Sevens event at Ivybridge

THE RAF Spitfires flew in to take victory for a second year running at the South Devon Sevens rugby tournament at Ivybridge.

The event at Cross-in-Hand attracted 13 teams – with five competing in the open tournament and eight taking part in the social contest.

The RAF were the class team in the open event and they beat 29 Commando Regiment in the final.

The 29 Commando team, which included players from Old Techs and Plymouth Fijians, had finished third in the pool but beat Ivybridge RFC’s Misfits side in the semi-final to set up an all-military final.

The Devon Ultras, made up of young county players, won the social tournament.

It was the second year running that the South Devon Sevens had been held at Ivybridge.

Gareth Elliott, Ivybridge’s head coach and event organiser, said: “It was a really good day. The weather held off a bit and we had a lot of spectators.

“We also had a band in the evening and we had some really good feedback.”
