GALLERY: Battershill sets new PB, while Wickett and Perry impress at Armada Summer 5k

ERME Valley Harriers’ Will Battershill set a new 3,000m steeplechase personal best at the Trond Mohn Games in Norway on Wednesday night.

Battershill clocked 8:31.89 as he finished eighth in a closely-fought World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze race, which was won by Sweden’s Vidar Johansson in 8:24.98. Battershill did beat last year’s British champion Mark Pearce.

It was the former Ivybridge Community College pupil’s first overseas World Athletics Tour event and he broke his previous best time by more than a second.

It was also the second time Battershill had run under Team England’s Commonwealth Games qualifying standard, having also done so last August. He is also within touching distance of the European Championship A standard, which stands at 8:30, and he is up to fourth in the UK rankings.

Meanwhile closer to home, the third Armada Summer 5k Series run took place at Saltram House on Wednesday evening, with Plymouth Harriers’ James Wickett and Erme Valley Harriers’ Cleo Perry impressing.

Wickett was first home in 18.21 minutes, with Plymouth Musketeers’ Scott Mansfield second in 19.05 minutes and Team H’s veteran Pete Waumsley third in 19.21, which was 29 seconds quicker than he had run last month.

Fellow veteran Perry came fourth overall and first woman in a quick 19.33 minutes, with ever-improving Erme Valley teenager Isabella Trowell second in 21.42 minutes and Plymouth Harriers veteran Jane Allison third in 22.20.
