ATHLETICS: Battershill runs season’s best time to claim victory at Birmingham

ERME Valley Harriers’ Will Battershill ran a season’s best time to claim victory in an all-domestic 3,000m steeplechase field at the Muller Birmingham Diamond League meeting at the weekend.

Battershill clocked 8:36.56 to claim the win in front of a big crowd at the newly-renovated Alexander Stadium.

That was the second fastest his time of his career and moves him up to fourth in the 2022 UK rankings.

Battershill described the win as an ‘amazing experience’ and feels he is starting to find his legs again after not running as fast as he had hoped the previous week at the BMC Grand Prix at Birmingham University.

He will continue his season on June 8 at the Trond Mohn Games in Bergen, Norway.

City of Plymouth’s internationals David King and James Arnott also competed at the Muller Birmingham Diamond League meeting.

Olympian King competed in a world-class 110m hurdles race. He finished seventh in 13.64 seconds.

The race was won by Jamaican Hansle Parchment, with countryman Omar McLeod. King’s GB team-mate Andy Pozzi came fifth.

Para-sprinter Arnott came sixth in the ambulant multi-class 100m in 11.62 seconds.

The following day, Arnott competed at the Loughborough International, where he came fourth in the multi-class 100m in 11.56 seconds.

Also at the Loughborough International, Erme Valley Harriers’ triple jumper Sam Trigg-Petrovic came fourth with a season’s best leap of 15.51m, while Tavistock discus thrower Edward Fileman made his Great Britain U20 debut where he threw 49.17m.
