WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Marine on the up with seven goals, plus Signal Box make cup progress

MARINE Academy Plymouth produced a sensational second half performance to beat Bideford 7-0 at home in the South West Women’s Premier Division on Sunday.

The match at Ivybridge was level at 0-0 at the break with struggling Bideford frustrating the hosts.

But Marine really upped their intensity second half and ended up running out comfortable winners to move up to sixth in the table.

Samantha Drewery got two of Marine’s goals, with their others coming from Amber Hadrill, Lucy Dann, Dionne Igalawuye, Chloe Harris and Jodie Shipton.

Plymouth Argyle’s first team and under-23 teams were not in action at the weekend, while Saltash United had to pull out of their FA Women’s Cup match at AFC Bournemouth due to availability problems.

In the FA Cup, Liskeard Athletic bounced back from their heavy defeat to Argyle U23s last weekend with a 4-0 home win over Axminster Town. Lucy Jones and Chloe Williams both scored twice for Liskeard.

Signal Box Oak Villa progressed in the Devon Women’s Senior Cup by beating city rivals University of Plymouth 4-2 at Weston Mill on Sunday.

The students turned up with a far stronger side than had lost 10-1 to the same opponents in the league back in September, but Signal Box always looked in command.

Vicky Jasper gave them the lead in the 13th minute with a cool finish from the right.

But the University of Plymouth equalised on 30 minutes when they beat the offside trap.

However, with the last play of the first half, the hosts restored their lead with another goal from Jasper, who was unmarked on the goal-line after a corner beat the Uni goalkeeper and defenders at the near post.

The second half was less than a minute old when the score became 3-1 when a visiting defender deflected the ball into her own net under pressure from Jasper following a great cross from the right.

Megan Appleby then surprised the Uni goalkeeper with a long-range lob from the right to make it 4-1.

The students did get a goal back late on but Signal Box can now look forward to playing West Exe Park Rangers in the next round.

In the Cornwall Women’s Cup, Saltash Borough beat Dropship FC 9-0 away.
