Old Techs could give some new faces a run-out against Plymstock Albion Oaks

OLD TECHS could give a number of new faces a run-out tonight when they open their pre-season campaign with a home game against Plymstock Albion Oaks at Weston Mill (6.45pm).

Techs had been due to play Bodmin, but the Cornish side pulled out of the fixture yesterday due to availability problems. However, Oaks agreed to step in late as they were also looking for a fixture after Tamar Saracens cancelled a planned game.

Devon One side Techs have boosted their squad over the summer with some new additions.

Among those joining the Old Boys are former Bodmin full-back/centre Paul Bethwick, Yorkshire prop Philip Coverdale, 29 Commando hooker Ben Hill, teenage back Harley Adams and ex-Devonport Services youth prop Jensen Baker, younger brother of current Techs front-rower Rudi.

“We are very happy with all of them,” said coach Shaun Bedford-Smith. “They have all integrated really well and have all played rugby before. We are looking forward to seeing them play.

“We are really pleased with the numbers we have had for training and everyone’s attitude. It has been a good pre-season so far.”

Techs have also been boosted by the return of Shane Abrew, James Douglas and Nick Dorrian.

“It is good to have competition for places as it makes people train,” said Bedford-Smith.

“As a club I think we are improving all round and we are definitely going in the right direction.

“We have spent thousands upgrading our changing rooms and lights. Players, committee and sponsors all work hard on that. We have also got a new kit on order, new post protectors and flags – just improving everything.”

Techs are expecting Devon One to be a real challenge this season with 14 sides in it.

“It is a bigger league this year and it is going to be a very tough league,” said Bedford-Smith. “It is hard every year but this year with more games you are going to need even more strength in depth.”

Techs have confirmed that Billy Evans will be their captain for the 2021-22 season.
