LAKESIDE Athletic made a winning return to action following the lockdown break by beating Paignton Villa 3-1 at the Parkway in the Devon League South & West Division on Saturday.
They might not have played a match for six weeks, but it took Lakeside just five minutes to open the scoring against their south Devon visitors, with Alex Cox firing in a great Jack Presland cross from the right.
It got better for the hosts 20 minutes later when Presland doubled their lead with a strike from the edge of the box.
Struggling Paignton did pull a goal back two minutes later from a corner but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
Lakeside were convinced they had scored a third goal at the start of the second half, but the referee was unable to see if the ball had crossed the line in a goal-line scramble.
But 15 minutes from time the home club did wrap up the game when man-of-the-match Cox fired in a header from another pinpoint cross.
Lakeside are eighth in the table, level on points with city rivals Plymstock United and Plympton Athletic. All three teams are only three points off fifth place and all have games in hand on the top four.
