TAVISTOCK Run Project’s Oliver Smart celebrated his selection for England’s ISF World Schools’ Cross Country Championship team by finishing second at this weekend’s Inter-Counties Championship and winning the British Cross Challenge Series title.
Smart finished as runner-up in the under-17 boys’ race at the joint Inter-Counties and Cross Challenge event at Loughborough.
He was only beaten by his England team-mate Will Barnicoat of Surrey, but his second place was enough to seal the overall 2019-20 national series title.
Smart also led Devon to the silver medal in the counties team competition. Bideford’s Flynn Jennings was fifth and he will also join Smart and Barnicoat in the England Schools’ team for the ISF World Cross Country Championships in Slovakia next month.
England have selected six boys and six girls for the championships which will take place between April 18-23.
Meanwhile, City of Plymouth’s under-13 athletes impressed at the Inter-Counties at Loughborough.
Molly Shorey, running for Devon, finished sixth, with club colleague Holly Reid, representing Cornwall, 12th and Molly Gilbey, also running for Cornwall, not too far behind in 26th.
