Plymouth’s Reid wins South West Cross Country Championship title in Yeovil

CITY of Plymouth’s Holly Reid became a regional cross country champion at the weekend.

Reid won the under-13 girls’ race at the South West Club and County Championships, which were held at Aldon Hill in Yeovil.

Representing Cornwall as well as City of Plymouth, Reid took victory by 13 seconds, with Bodmin’s Georgina Clarke second.

Reid also enjoyed double team success, helping Plymouth to the club title and Cornwall in the county crown.

City of Plymouth won the team event by more than 50 points with Molly Gilbey finishing sixth, Verity Tank 10th and Madeleine Jones 11th.

Tavistock Run Project’s Oliver Smart took runners-up spot in the under-17 boys’ race after enjoying another good battle with his English Schools’ team-mate Flynn Jennings of Bideford.

Smart had won the Devon title in December, but the Yeovil course suited Jennings who took victory this time around. The pair did help Devon to a convincing county team victory.

Plymouth Harriers’ Katy Hedgethorne finished third in the senior women’s race, while there was also top 10 placings for Tavistock Run Project’s Rachel Malthouse and Tavistock’s Jo Meek, who were first and second in the over-35 category.

There was also a top 10 finish for Plymouth Harriers and Devon runner Johnny Gilby in the senior men’s race. He also took silver medal in the over-40 category. Tavistock Run Project’s Ben Neale and Chris Rimmer were 14th and 15th.

City of Plymouth’s Thomas Jones, representing Devon, came seventh in a competitive under-15 boys’ race, while team-mate Talia Sullivan finished in the same position in the under-20 women’s category.

In the non-County Championship under-11 race, City of Plymouth’s Barnaby Hutchings secured fifth place. He was just four seconds off second spot in a close finish.
