Region’s top young swimmers hoping to impress for Devon in Sheffield

A HOST of the region’s top young swimmers will be hoping for success with Devon this weekend when they take part in the National County Team Championships.

Plymouth Leander, Mount Kelly, Dartmoor Darts, Devonport Royal and Dinnaton all have swimmers included in the Devon squad for the trip to Sheffield.

Devon will be battling it out for the Division One title at Ponds Forge on Sunday.

Last year they finished third behind Yorkshire and Scotland West in the popular short course season curtain raiser. Devon’s best finish was in 2017 when they came runners-up.

But they are set to head to South Yorkshire with a strong squad that includes a number of internationals. European Junior Championship medallist Honey Osrin and European Youth Games medallists Sophie Freeman and Cameron Williams are among those provisionally named in Devon’s team.

The competition in Sheffield sees 36 counties competing in two divisions in two pools. There are individual events for 12-13 year-olds, 14-15 year-olds and 16-17 year-olds. There are also relays for all the age groups and a mixed event.

Devon’s provisional squad is as follows: –

100m FREESTYLE: Ruby Griffiths (Plymouth Leander SC), James Wheatley (Mount Kelly Swimming), Sophie Freeman (Plymouth Leander), Aiden Symons-Brown (Devonport Royal), Macy Lawrence (Mount Kelly Swimming), Reid Jones (Plymouth Leander)

100m BACKSTROKE: Ella Osborne (Exeter City), Finn Broekhoven (Plymouth Leander), Bella Hodges (Mount Kelly Swimmign), Hubert Gdaniec (Plymouth Leander), Honey Osrin (Plymouth Leander), Samuel Perks (Basildon & Phoenix)

100m BREASTSTROKE:  Jasmine D’Cunha (Dinnaton), Joshua Williams (Dartmoor Darts Aquatic), Imogen Lambert (Mount Kelly Swimming), Cameron Williams (Dartmoor Darts Aquatic), Lana Broekhoven (Plymouth Leander), Filippo Coacci (Plymouth Leander)

100m BUTTERFLY: Blythe Kinsman (Plymouth Leander), Joshua Williams (Dartmoor Darts Aquatic), Sophie Freeman (Plymouth Leander), James Hart (Reading), Joshua Gammon (Plymouth Leander), Caoimhe Quinn (Mount Kelly)

RELAY: Sara Sari (Exeter City), Harriette Lewcock (Paignton), Aidan Watts (Plymouth Leander), Ella Bardgett (Plymouth Leander), Lucia Grant (Plymouth Leander), Olivia Marshall (Plymouth Leander), Ra’eez Warley (Plymouth Leander).

CORNWALL will compete in the Division Two Championships in Sheffield. Their squad includes Dartmoor Darts’ Shay Brent, Mount Kelly’s Oliver Walker and Caradon’s Olivia Shute and Oliver Naylor.
