Smith and Ryder among the athletes to impress at BMC meeting in Exeter

CITY of Plymouth’s Dean Smith claimed victory in the 800m at the BMC meeting at Exeter on Tuesday night.

Smith managed to just hold off Cheltenham’s Jamie Harper to take the win in 1:57.02.

His City of Plymouth under-17 team-mate Oliver Woodmason set a new PB for the two lap race with a 2:04.96 run. There was also a PB for Plymouth Harriers’ John Cooper, who clocked 2:05.96, while Erme Valley’s Liam Hallows ran 2:10.57 and Tavistock youngster Will Russell 2:13.73.

In the 1,500m, Tavistock’s Emma Ryder came second in a thrilling women’s A race with a PB run of 4:43.04. The top five runners in that event all ran new lifetime bests.

There was also a PB for Tavistock’s Joe Beaton, who clocked 4:20.57 in the men’s 1,500m, while City of Plymouth over-55 veteran Stephen Burns ran 4:44.98. Tavistock’s Ewan Dix clocked 4:56.01, while team-mate Charlotte Walker finished in 5:31.69.

Meanwhile, at the Newquay & Par Sprint, Jumps and Relays Meet, City of Plymouth’s Noah Jones continued his good form by finishing second overall and first junior in the pole vault with a 3.50m jump.

Club colleague Erin Muldoon won the under-15 high jump with a season’s best of 1.50. She was also fourth in the long jump with 4.38m.

Tavistock’s Grace Wonnacott set new PBs in both the 100m and 200m. She clocked 13.9 for the 100m and won the 200m event in 29.3 seconds.
