PLYMOUTH Argaum have been quietly rebuilding their squad this summer after relegation from the Cornwall/Devon League.
Argaum may have suffered a few departures, notably Calum Mills and Adam Walker to Plymstock Albion Oaks, after dropping into Devon One, but they are quite happy with how their squad is taking shape for the 2019-20 season.
Their recruitment has focussed on persuading former players to return and attracting people who are either new to the area or who have not been playing for another club.
Their new arrivals this summer include rugby league utility back Billy Stockwell, hooker Thomas Mann, a doctor who has been playing in Edinburgh, scrum-half Luke Nicol, teenager winger Drew Preston, Brad Henniker, Lewis Foster, former colt Seb Thomas and former Tavistock colts’ captain Jack Morris, while Ethan Howe is also back at Bickleigh Down after missing most of last season and Mike Hunt is also back in training.
There is also a chance Argaum may get some Royal Marines or students join them in September.
“We’ve tried to recruit organically,” said club secretary Stuart Quarterman. “We contacted a lot of the old colts from a couple of years ago and quite a lot are very keen.
“We have had some good numbers at training. We are regularly getting 20 twice a week and have had about 35 players at training at various times.
“We are still picking up players and I wouldn’t say we have lost a massive amount.
“We know Devon One is going to be a hard league, but it is not going to be as hard as the Cornwall/Devon League.”
Argaum have again opted against having many pre-season games. They did play a mix-and-match social fixture with Saltash last weekend to mark the Cornish club’s 50th anniversary, but their only real proper pre-season game will be against Plympton Victoria the week before the league campaign starts.
Meanwhile, Plympton Victoria will begin their pre-season with a trip to neighbours OPMs on Saturday (12noon).
Also on Saturday, Cornwall/Devon League side Plymstock Albion Oaks will host Western Counties West outfit Saltash at Horsham Fields.
Sunday sees the popular annual Paul Lethbridge Memorial Day at Tamar Saracens’ Parkway Ground. The event starts at 1pm, with a match between Sarries and Old Techs kicking off at 3pm.
