The 15-year-old, who has already won the Devon Schools’ and South West Inter-Counties’ cross country titles since the turn of the year, set a new course record at February’s Tavy 5k.
Smart knocked two seconds off Jim Cole’s previous best mark with a run of 15 minutes and 38 seconds.
He was pushed all the way by his club team-mate Ben Neale, who clocked a new personal best time of 15.42 minutes. The pair were a long way ahead of the rest of the field.
Third place went to Plymouth Harriers’ Alex Peyton-Jones, who came home in 17.24 minutes, which was just a second ahead of Plymouth Musketeers’ Alan Ryder, who set a new course record in the over-55 category.
Plymouth Harriers’ Ami Yetton was first women in 19.10 minutes. She already holds the course record for the female over-35 category.
Her club colleague, Jane Allison, the record holder for the over-45 age group, was second in 21.01 minutes, with Tavistock under-17 athlete Tilly McDowell third in 21.09 minutes.
