PLYMOUTH Leander’s Tom Beeley was a medal winner at the BUCS Long Course Swimming Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.
Beeley won silver in the men’s 200m butterfly final where he had a great battle with Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth medal winner Duncan Scott.
The pair were neck and neck for the entire race. University of Plymouth student Beeley looked to be pulling away down the final 50 metres but, like he has done so often in major competitions, Scott came back in the last 10 metres and managed to just touch first.
Scott clocked 2:00.47, with Beeley touching in 2:00.68. The pair were more than four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Beeley also reached the 100m butterfly final where he came sixth.
There was a gold medal for former Plymouth College and Leander swimmer Charlotte Atkinson in the women’s 200m butterfly. She also won silver in the 100m butterfly, while fellow former Leander star Tom Fannon, like Atkinson now at Loughborough University, took bronze in the men’s 50m freestyle.
