Plymouth’s Tank impresses on her Great Britain debut at European Cross Country Champs

CITY of Plymouth athlete Poppy Tank claimed a top 10 finish and a team bronze medal on her Great Britain debut at the European Cross Country Championships in The Netherlands.

Tank produced an impressive display in the women’s under-23 race at the Beekse Safari Park in Tilburg.

The former Plymouth College pupil, who is now studying at Utah University in America, led the race for a spell and had a good battle with former European junior 1,500m silver medallist Amy Griffiths to finish as Britain’s top finisher.

The more experienced Griffiths, who had won the British trials last month, finished just one second ahead of Tank. Griffiths came seventh in 21.04 minutes, with Tank crossing the line in ninth spot in 21.05.

The race was won by Danish star Anna Emilie Moller, who trains in the UK. She crossed the line in 20.34.

Third British athlete home was Abbie Donnelly in 17th spot, which, with Griffiths and Tank’s top 10 finishes, enough for GB to win team bronze behind Germany and Spain.

In the under-20 women’s race, Cornwall AC’s Grace Brock, who has been a regular on the Westward League Cross Country scene, finished 11th and helped GB win team gold.
