Dixon proud to be in the running for British diving athlete of the year

PLYMOUTH’S Matthew Dixon says he is ‘really proud’ to be nominated for British Diving’s Athlete of the Year Award for 2018.

Dixon is in the running with Olympic gold medallists Jack Laugher and Chris Mears.

The winner will be decided by a public vote and diving fans have until 12.30pm on Saturday to make their choice.

Dixon has had a tremendous year. He became British platform champion, won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games, he also won synchro silver medals at the European Championships and World Junior Championships and reached two finals on his debut at the FINA World Cup in China.

“My year in general was amazing,” said the 18-year-old. “I came away with quite a few medals and good results.

“My personal highlight was getting two medals at the Commonwealth Games.”

Dixon, who is busy learning new dives, is thrilled to make the shortlist for the award:

“It is amazing to be recognised in this way,” he said. “I haven’t been up for an award like this before. To be recognised is a really proud moment for me.”
