PLYMSTOCK School judo star Max Gregory gained more international experience at the weekend when he competed in Germany at the International Masters Bremen.
The South Brent Judo Club member had a hard day of fighting in the under-18 -90kg category, but finished the competition, which attracted athletes from all over the world, in an impressive seventh place.
In a group of 21 competitors, Gregory had a bye in the first round before decisively winning his second contest by ippon against Slovakia’s Peter Verzjak.
He narrowly lost his third contest against world number seven Louis Mai from Germany – the eventual gold medallist.
Gregory got pulled back into the repecharge where he defeated Netherlands’ Micheal Pannekoek by ippon in golden score.
However, unfortunately he lost his next contest against another competitor from the Netherlands, Vince Klijsen, who went on to win bronze.
Gregory has now gained world ranking points from one ranking competition. He is currently ranked 46th.
