Tavistock’s Smart becomes South West champion with dominant run at Yeovil

TAVISTOCK’S Oliver Smart became South West cross country champion on Sunday at Aldon Hill in Yeovil.

Smart has been in impressive form this season at under-15 level and he added the regional championship and inter-counties’ titles to his list of honours with another dominant run.

He triumphed by 11 seconds to help Devon win the county team prize and Tavistock to take silver in the club team event. Will Russell, Euan Botham and Dan Luckham were Tavistock’s other scorers.

There was also a victory for City of Plymouth’s Holly Reid in the non-championship under-11 girls’ race in Somerset.

She left everybody else in her wake over the 1,580m distance to win by 20 seconds. There was also a top 10 finish in the same race for Tavistock’s Freya Page.

Tavistock had two top 10 finishers in the under-13 girls’ race, which was won by Cornwall’s Maisy Luke. Amelia Riggot came fifth and Kristyna Cade 10th as Devon won the team title.

City of Plymouth’s Hannah Blair was a top 10 finisher in the women’s race. She came ninth.

Tavistock Run Project’s Jordan Andrews was also ninth in the senior men’s race, with Jim Cole 15th and Adam Holland 16th (not including under-20s athletes). Plymouth Harriers’ John Porter was third over-40.

In the men’s under-20 race, which was run with the seniors, City of Plymouth’s Jack Williams came fifth, with Erme Valley’s Joe Battershill ninth.

In the women’s under-20 competition, Tavistock’s Jennifer Sabine came eighth, with team-mate Emma Ryder 12th and Erme Valley’s Emily Oakshott 14th.

There were top 15 spots for Tavistock’s Natasha Farrington and Isabella Dunlop in the under-17 girls’ race, while club colleagues Bradley Stevens and Tom Brew were also in the top 15 in the boys’ 17 race, with Edward Smart not far behind.
