Services looking forward to playing 10s rugby with fellow Plymouth Combination clubs

WESTERN Counties West club Devonport Services will host the first of two summer rugby 10s events on Friday evening at the Rectory.

They will entertain Cornwall/Devon League side Tavistock and Devon One outfit Old Techs this week.

Then the following Friday they will welcome two more clubs from the same divisions in the form of Plymouth Argaum and Tamar Saracens.

Services head coach Mike Lewis admits it is a good chance to mix with other Plymouth Combination clubs and also work on a bit of pre-season fitness.

“It just makes a change from normal pre-season,” said Lewis.

“It is a chance for guys to run around with a ball, do a bit of tackling and passing and try and get a few points, rather than just training with each other on a Tuesday and Thursday.

“Not everyone likes doing pre-season training, but people like playing games, so it might bring a few guys out of the woodwork.

“It is just something a bit different and it’s good to mix with other clubs. It helps them out just as much as us.

“I don’t think clubs share enough. Even if this is just chance for a chat to see what things are working for each other, it’ll be good.

“And 10s games tend to be pretty even, no matter who you are playing.”

The action at the Rectory gets underway on Friday from 7pm.
