Tavistock begin touch rugby sessions as club starts building for 2017/18 campaign

TAVISTOCK RFC are beginning their preparations for the new rugby season this week.

The club are starting social touch rugby at Sandy Park tonight (June 13 at 7pm) for three weeks before ‘official’ pre-season training begins on July 4.

Tavistock says anyone is welcome to come along and have some fun at their Tuesday touch sessions this month.

The Cornwall/Devon League side are hoping they can continue to build after an encouraging season last term.

They have added the services of Nick Lane, of NLT Fitness, and Jamie Turpin, of Tavistock Physio Clinics, to provide them with strength and conditioning sessions in 2017/18.

They are also looking to bring in a new backs to strengthen their coaching team further.

Coach Hammy Kerswill said: “After rebuilding last season, the lads are already buzzing to get going again.

“We have high aspirations this season and are setting our sights on a climb up the league table.

“We have a plethora of colts coming into the senior squad and a number of new signings lined up. The club is always welcoming of new members.”

He added:  “We have a thriving social scene with a number of events lined up over the summer, including football against Lamerton FC, darts at Tavistock CC, cricket against Whitchurch CC and the whole club entry into the Tavistock Carnival.”

Kerswill has confirmed the club will be sending a team to Devonport Services’ pre-season 10s tournament and have arranged a midweek fixture away with North Tawton on August 24. They will also have an inter-club match the week before the new campaign starts. However, they are still looking for a fixture for Saturday, August 19.

Any club who can help with a fixture or any new players interested in joining them can contact them through their website.
