CITY of Plymouth athlete Victoria Weir can look forward to competing for Great Britain at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Uganda later this month after finishing third at the Inter-Counties Championships in Loughborough on Saturday.
The top three in the under-20 race at Prestwold Hall were guaranteed a spot in the GB team.
Weir, running for Devon, finished behind Scottish athletes Anna MacFadyen and Gill Black, although there was controversy at the race with Amelia Quirk thinking she had won only to find out she had run off the course while leading.
Great Britain can take six athletes to Uganda so it is likely Quirk will be included, as she, like Weir, were part of the successful junior women’s team that took gold at the European Cross Country Championships in Italy.
MacFayden clocked 22.12 to take the title, with Black crossing the line in 22.17 and Weir finishing in 22.24. There was then a 15 second gap to Wales’ Cari Hughes.
The World Cross Country Championships take place in Kampala on March 26.
