Plymouth Leander finish ASA National Winter Meet on a high

PLYMOUTH LEANDERPLYMOUTH Leander ended the ASA National Winter Meet on a high.

Edoardo Valsecchi and Jessica Jackson both won individual medals on the final day of the short course event in Sheffield.

Valsecchi won championship gold in the men’s 50m butterfly in a new personal best time of 24.00 seconds.

Russian Georgy Chernov touched first in 23.26 seconds but he was guesting at the event and so did not count for the medals.

Jackson took silver in the women’s 200m freestyle final in a time of 1:56.08. The race was won by Sheffield’s Ellie Faulkner in 1:55.63.

In the 200m freestyle B final, Leander’s Juliette Casini finished fourth.

There was a second place for Adam Chillingworth in the men’s 200m breaststroke B final in 2:14.60.

Leander’s Emma England reached the women’s 50m final, where she finished ninth in 25.65 seconds.

In the B final, her team-mates Anita M’Cartney (25.54), Felicity Passon (25.86) and Casini (26.02) came third, fifth and seventh.

On Saturday evening, Sam Dailley broke British junior records in the 100m IM and 200m butterfly.

Dailley won the 100m IM B final in 56.97 and came third in the 200m butterfly B final with a time of 2:00.17. His team-mate Freddy Clampett came second in the butterfly B race in 2:10.10 and Valsecchi seventh in 2:02.72.

James Watson reached the 100m IM A final, where he came seventh in 57.17 seconds.

There was also a seventh place for Laura Stephens in the women’s 100m butterfly, touching in a time of 59.01.

Stephens also featured for the Leander 4x100m IM relay squad that took fifth place.

Perry Gardner won the 100m backstroke B final in 53.75, while Marcus Gardiner was third in the 50m breaststroke B final with a time of 28.49.

Mount Kelly’s Niamh Robinson reached the women’s 100m breaststroke final where she took eighth in 1:08.42.
