FORMER Ivybridge Community College pupil Sonny Webster boosted his hopes of securing Great Britain’s one male weightlifting spot at this summer’s Olympic Games with a record-breaking performance at the British Championships.
Webster set a new national under-23 record and a personal best to beat Owen Boxall at a packed Ricoh Arena in Coventry to triumph in the -94kg category.
He lifted 152kg in the snatch before producing a stunning final effort in the clean and jerk to lift 194kg.
Webster, who is now based in Bristol, finished with a total of 346kg, with Boxall, who also set a new PB, collecting 343kg.
