TAVISTOCK Athletic Club athlete Tess Masselink moved up to third in the UK under-20 1,500m steeplechase rankings with a new personal best at the Cornwall Schools’ Championships in Par on Saturday.
Callington Community College pupil Masselink clocked 4:53.00 for the event, which was the first time she had run under five minutes.
The 18-year-old’s previous best was 5:00.38, which she set on her way to fourth place at last year’s English Schools’ Championships at Gateshead.
Only four under-20 athletes have run under five minutes for the women’s 1,500m steeplechase this year. One of those is City of Plymouth star Victoria Weir, who tops the UK rankings with a time of 4:50.49.
Masselink is also ranked third in the UK for the 2000m steeplechase, having clocked 6:42.1 at the Cornwall County AA Championships last month.
