Battershill claims top five placing for a second year running at English Schools’ Championships

WILL BATTERSHILL claimed a fifth-placed finished for the second year in the senior boys’ category at the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships.

The Ivybridge Community College, who competed in the steeplechase for Great Britain at last summer’s IAAF World Youth Championships in Columbia, was Devon’s highest placed finisher at Saturday’s event in Nottingham.

In a blanket finish just six seconds separated second from fifth in the senior boys’ race, which was shorter than Battershill has been running in the men’s under-20 category at club level.

London’s Alex Yee won the race, while Devon were 12th team home.

Plymouth College’s Poppy Tank was Devon’s next highest finisher with eighth spot in the senior girls’ race, which was won by Sabrina Sinha.

Cornwall’s Tavistock athlete Tess Masselink was 19th in the same event.

Cornwall did claim one title, with Truro’s Harris Mier winning the junior boys’ race.
