Swimmers from around the country ready for Breakwater event

P1000063

SWIMMERS from around the country will brave the waters off Plymouth on Sunday for the annual Breakwater Swim.

The event, held to raise money for the Chestnut Appeal, is fast becoming one of the most popular swims in the open water calendar. Entries for this year’s event sold out a while ago.

Competitors are taken in a boat from the Barbican out to Breakwater and then they swim the 2.2 miles back to Tinside Beach.

Last year’s event had to be moved back a month due to bad weather but organisers are hoping there will be no problems on Sunday.

Steve Ferguson won in 2014, in an event that attracted 170 competitors. Ferguson completed the course in 45 minutes. He was just ahead of 15-year-old Dinnaton swimmer Jack Northmore.

The swimmers will set off at 2pm on Sunday and the best place to watch them come in will be around the Terrace Café on the Hoe. Organisers expect the first swimmer home around 2.40pm.
