Top eight for City of Plymouth hammer thrower Edwards in Portugal

CITY of Plymouth hammer thrower Jonathan Edwards claimed two top eight placings at an international throws meet in Leiria, Portugal.

The competition, which attracted many of Europe’s up-and-coming young athletes, was split into two days.

On the opening day, 22-year-old Edwards finished sixth with a best throw of 59.23 metres, before then managing 59.37 metres the next day to come eighth in the elite final.

Spain’s Javier Clenfuegos, who had a best throw of 71.81m, won on both days, with England’s Michael Bomba and Chris Shorthouse alternating between second and third.

Edwards, who competed at last year’s Commonwealth Games, was short of his season’s best and PB.

He had thrown 63.99 metres to win the recent South West Inter-Counties Championship, while last year he managed 66.28m at the Wales Commonwealth Games trials.
