DIRECTOR of rugby Dave Sansom has described Plymouth Argaum’s nomination for ‘Club of the Year’ at the National Rugby Awards as ‘crazy’.
Argaum have been shortlisted along with fellow Devon side Crediton, All Blacks RFC, Bishop Stortford, Barkers Butts and Colchester RFC.
Members of the Bickleigh Down outfit will travel to Twickenham on September 2, where they will rub shoulders with some of rugby’s big hitters.
Among the other awards on the night are Professional Player of the Year, Women’s Player of the Year and School Team of the Year.
George Ford, Billy Vuinpola, Jonathan Joseph, Chris Pennell, Thomas Waldrom and Samu Manoa are nominees for Professional Player of the Year.
“It is crazy that we have been nominated,” said Sansom, who has helped guide the once Devon Two strugglers to successive promotions and into the lofty heights of the Cornwall/Devon League.
“The awards are up at Twickenham. It’s a Wednesday night, so I might have to take time off work. It is also the week of our first league game.”
But what would it mean to win? “That would be nice, wouldn’t it?” he said. “It would be a laugh, a little team like us winning something like that!”
