Plymouth’s Matthew Dixon looks for European Games success

Matthew DixonPLYMOUTH diver Matthew Dixon will be hoping for glory at the European Games in Baku today.

The 15-year-old, who competed at last year’s Commonwealth Games and the recent European Championships, will take part in the 10m platform event.

“I would really like a medal, because it is a junior event,” he said.

“It’s Group A and B divers mixed into one. I’m Group B so will be against Group A’s, but I would love it if I could come up with a medal.

“It’s been a really good season. I’ve had a few golds and one silver, so overall it has been going well.”

Dixon admits he looks up to fellow Plymouth diver Tom Daley, who he competed alongside at last year’s Commonwealth Games.

“I’d like to be like Tom Daley,” he said. “He is one of the best in the world at the moment.

“He is someone I look up to.

“I just want to go to an Olympics and get a medal at a World Series.”

Dixon’s Plymouth Diving team-mate Natasha MacManus will also be in action today. She will compete for Ireland in the women’s three-metre springboard competition.
