Devonport Royal’s Beth Ward helps Great Britain to first win in Baku

DEVONPORT Royal’s Beth Ward helped Great Britain’s women’s water polo team to their first victory at the European Games in Baku.

After defeats to favourites Greece, Germany and the Netherlands, Great Britain’s young side hit back on Tuesday to beat Israel 13-9.

Defender Ward played a key role in the win, which came courtesy of goals by Grace Rowland (3), Katherine Rogers (3), Mhairi Nurthen (3), Lucy Shaw, (2) Danica Brazier and Hannah Edwards.

Afterwards coach Nick Buller said: “We’re pleased with the win but we know we can do much better than we saw. We’re disappointed with our conversion. We’ll look at the video and look to put it right for our next game.”

That next game will be against unbeaten Hungary, who currently top Pool A.
