Gilby ends Monaghan’s dominance of Armada 5k Series

IMG_8570THE warm weather produced a bumper turnout and some fast times for the third race in the Armada 5k Series at Saltram Park.

Some 199 runners finished the time trial, with Plymouth-based Derby AC athlete Johnny Gilby ending Peter Monaghan’s dominance of the event.

Torbay’s Monaghan had won the first two races in the series but he had to settle for third place on Wednesday night behind Gilby and Tavistock’s Neil Barkell.

Gilby (pictured left) ran a storming 15 minutes and 54 seconds for the multi-terrain course, which was more than a minute faster than the winning time in either of the opening two events.IMG_8573

Barkell finished in 16.51, with Monaghan (pictured right) clocking 17.08, which was his slowest time of the series for the course.

Jim Cole was fourth in 17.12, with Tamar Trotters’ Peter Waumsley two seconds behind in fifth.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Alison McEwing was first women home in 19.07, with Plymouth Harriers duo Ami Yetton (19.55) and Jane Allison (20.06) second and third respectively.
