PLYMOUTH Argyle dropped out of a League Two promotion play-off spot after losing 2-1 away at Portsmouth.

In front of more than 16,500 people at Fratton Park, the home side took the lead just after half-time when Jed Wallace scored his 16th goal of the season from 20 yards out.

Pompey doubled their advantage in the 76th minute with a goal from Ryan Taylor.

Argyle hit back straight away with a volley from Olly Lee, but they were unable to find another goal in the final 12 minutes of the Dockyard derby.

Late on Pilgrims captain Curtis Nelson was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The defeat saw Argyle slip down to eighth in the table, one point behind Newport, who lost 2-0 away at Exeter.

Tenth-placed Exeter are now level on points with John Sheridan’s side, with Luton Town in ninth also sitting on 61 points.
