PLYMOUTH’S international para-powerlifter Doaa Shayea will go into this summer’s Commonwealth Games in confident mood after recently winning a silver medal at the European Championships in Georgia.
Shayea, who has already been selected to represent Team England in Glasgow, made the podium in the women’s up to 67kg category in Tbilisi.
The 27-year-old was only beaten by Turkish athlete Sibel Cam, who claimed her third successive European title.
Former wheelchair track racer Shayea was delighted to medal and hopes her success will inspire others.
“This achievement means a great deal to me, not only as an athlete but as a wheelchair user, as it highlights what can be achieved with the right support, determination, and opportunity,” she said.
“I hope it can also serve as a positive example for others in our local community.”
Shayea only took up powerlifting four years ago but has already achieved considerable success and competed at World and European Championships.
