PLYMOUTH Euan McCabe enjoyed an impressive World Cup debut for Great Britain in Canada over the weekend.
The 20-year-old claimed a synchro medal and a top five individual placing in the platform events in Montreal.
McCabe had to work really hard to make the individual 10m platform final, with 27 divers battling for just 12 spots, but he sneaked in by two points with a score of 395.45 points.
But he really upped his performance in the final to take fifth place with an impressive score of 452.70 points.
He was only beaten by Chinese stars Yuming Bail and Junjie Lian, Australia’s Cassiel Rousseau and Ukraine’s Mark Hrystenko.
Two of McCabe’s dives scored more than 84 points.
He was in fourth place after the opening three rounds, but he could not quite nail his fourth round 207B and dropped down to eighth. However, he hit back with two great final dives, including scoring 88.80 points for his 109C, to move back up the standings.
After that impressive performance, he then teamed up with Ben Cutmore in the 10m synchro event and the two World Cup debutants won bronze in a strong competition.
The teenage Chinese pair of Renjie Zhao and Zhinao Yang were in a class of their own at the top of the standings, but the battle for the silver and bronze medals was incredibly tight and in the end just 10 points separated second from fifth.
McCabe and Cutmore scored 399.12 points for bronze, with Mexico’s Kevin Berlin Reyes and Randal Willars Valdez just edging them out for silver by just over a point with 400.41 points.
Neutral athletes Nikita Shleikher and Rusian Ternovoi were fourth with 396.24 points.
The World Cup should have been moving straight on to Mexico, but the second leg has been cancelled due to unrest in the country.
It means qualification for the Diving World Cup Super Final in Beijing, China, at the start of May, will be done of the basis of results from this weekend’s round in Montreal.
