WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle beat Marine Academy in Devon Challenge Cup, plus wins for Marjon, Oak Villa and Elm Fusion

PLYMOUTH Argyle opened their Devon Women’s Challenge Cup campaign by beating city rivals Marine Academy Plymouth 5-0 at Foulston Park on Sunday.

The cup match was the first time the Pilgrims had played at their new hub at Brickfields.

FANL Southern Premier Division side Argyle did the damage against their lower league opponents in the first half on Sunday, storming into a 4-0 lead at the break with three goals coming in the space of just three minutes.

Una Lue got the Pilgrims off the mark and Tamara Wilcock and Panagiouta Popaioannou quickly added further goals.

Paris Dalton then added a fourth in the 23rd minute before Tianna Teisar bagged their fifth in the second half.

The Devon Challenge Cup is this year being played in a mini league structure featuring National League sides Argyle, Exeter City and Marine Academy Plymouth.

Meanwhile, in the Devon Women’s Senior Cup, Plymouth Marjon continued their good form with an 8-1 home win over Ottery St Mary.

Sianna Goodard bagged a hat-trick for Marjon, with Beatriz Almeida, Robyn Hearn, Rosie Kenny, Aimee Kilpatrick and Ellie Pearce also finding the back of the net for the hosts.

SB Oak Villa got back to winning ways in the Devon Women’s Premier Division by beating Bradworthy 4-0 at Manadon on Sunday.

Kiri Pethrick scored a fine hat-trick for Oak Villa, with Mia Dulling scoring their other goal.

In the Devon South & West Division, Abigail Hyndman scored four as Elm Fusion beat a spirited Lakeside Athletic 6-0 at Tor Bridge High.

Bottom side Lakeside really made life tough for the league leaders, particularly in the first half.

With the Lakeside goalkeeper in top form and their defence working over-time, Elm had to wait until the 20th minute to finally break the deadlock when Hyndman got her first.

She then rounded the goalkeeper for a second on 34 minutes before Maise Godfrey finished off some good passing between Elm’s front three to give them a 3-0 lead at the break.

After some more good saves denied Elm, they finally got a fourth when substitute Jade Bryan fired in a cracking effort from the right edge of the box.

Hyndman then added a good long-range effort before she completed the scoring three minutes later.

In Cornwall League Division One, Callington Town beat St Agnes 3-2 at home.
