CITY of Plymouth’s Annabel Arnold, Evie Bolt and Olivia Walkerdine and Tavistock’s Freddie Whybrow continued their good cross country form with victories at round four of the Westward Cross Country League at the weekend.
Their latest success came on Sunday in the wind at Westward Ho!’s Northam Burrows.
Arnold, fresh from winning the South West Club & County Championships the week before, held off the challenge of Exeter University’s Jenny Laggate to take top honours in the senior women’s race.
Also in the senior women’s race, there were age category victories for Tavistock’s Emma White (F45) and Plymouth Harriers’ Kate Blakemore (F60) and a second place for Tavistock’s Jenny Jeeves (F55).
Whybrow made it four Westward League wins in a row in the under-15 boys’ category.
On the flat north Devon course, Whybrow took victory by an impressive 16 seconds.
His club colleague Luke Scott-Tucker came third, with fellow Tavistock athlete Eldon Young fifth. City of Plymouth Finley Eales also made the top 10 by finishing ninth.
Bolt’s win came in the under-11 girls’ race, where she held off Cornwall AC’s Ishmael Niyah to take her third successive victory in the series.
City of Plymouth again dominated that under-11 girls’ category, with six runners in the top 10.
Genevieve Stone came third, Chloe Souness sixth, Ivy Ling seventh, Theia Jones ninth and Harper Linney-Goodall 10th.
There was a second-placed finish for City of Plymouth’s Lucas Sweeney in the under-13 boys’ race. He was just pipped by Cornwall AC’s Sam Bradbury. Sweeney’s club team-mate Rafe Jackson was seventh.
There was also a second place finish for another City of Plymouth athlete, Elsie Goodspeed. Her runners-up spot came in the under-15 girls’ race.
Walkerdine claimed her second victory of the series in the under-13 girls’ event, where she won by six seconds. There was also a top 10 finish in that race by club colleague Margot Goodspeed.
Erme Valley Harriers’ Ben Holmes leads the senior men’s series standings after finishing third at Westward Ho! It was his fourth top-four finish.
Tavistock’s Ben Neale was first M40 on Sunday, with Plymouth Harriers’ Johnny Gilby second M45 and Tavistock’s Marc Curtis (M55) and Martin Exley-Deane (F65) also second in their age categories.
City of Plymouth’s Freddie Blight finished third in a depleted under-17 boys’ field, while there was a fourth-placed finish for club colleague Jack Penney in the under-11 boys’ race.
