DEVONPORT Services moved five points clear at the top of Women’s NC 2 South West (West) after beating Newton Abbot 35-5 at Keyham on Sunday in heavy rain.
Services took just one minute to open the scoring when centre Sky Burgos stormed through to score under the posts and Hannah Cataldo added the conversion.
Fifteen minutes later full-back Megan Collyer added a second try in the left corner, which Cataldo brilliantly converted,
Newton Abbot finally got into the game and had some intense pressure before half-time, but Services kept them out.
And straight at the start of the second half, Devonport increased their lead. Newton Abbot’s kick-off did not go 10 so Services got the scrum on the halfway line and they attacked from it. Hannah Pomfret made a great break before putting Annie Jones away to score in the left corner.
Cataldo, who was in great form with the boot, also converted that tough kick.
The visitors did pull a try back straight after that, but Services quickly added a fourth try courtesy of number eight Megan McCombie, which Cataldo again converted.
Despite picking up a yellow card late on, Devonport added a fifth try with Jones again going over in the left corner after some great passing across the line.
And Nadine Kelly kept up the home side’s 100 per cent kicking ratio on the day by adding the conversion.
Although Services are top of the table, second-placed Exeter Saracens and third-placed Paignton do have games in hand on them.
Saltash’s game away at St Austell and Plymouth Argaum’s home match against Camborne in NC 3 South West (West) were both postponed on Sunday.
Ivybridge, who are top of Championship South West 2 played on Saturday and beat Oxford Harlequins 88-5 with wingers Abbie Knight and Charleigh Hopkins both getting hat-tricks. A report on that game can be found HERE.
