YOUNG Dartmoor Velo riders impressed as their club hosted round eight of the South West Cyclo-Cross League at Newnham Park on Sunday.

Horrendous weather, particularly for the earlier races, made it tough for riders on the course around the bottom part of the Plympton country estate.

It had also been bad weather when Plymouth Corinthian hosted round four on the top part of Newnham Park in October.

Dartmoor Velo’s Samuel Medland stormed to victory on Sunday in the under-14 boys’ race, which was run with the under-16 age group.

He finished second overall and was nearly six minutes ahead of the second-placed under-14 boy.

Club colleagues Aoife Scawn and Bryony Medland also impressed in that third race of the day, finishing fourth and fifth overall and winning their female age categories.

Scawn was first under-16 girl and Bryony Medland came first under-14 girl. Both were well ahead of their race rivals.

Fellow female Dartmoor Velo riders Indie Skinner and Rosie Eastmond came first and second in the under-12 girls’ race, while club colleague Harry Totham was second under-12 boy, just behind North Devon Velo’s Leo Thorne.

There was a second place finish for Dartmoor’s Tahnee Skinner in the under-10 girls’ race, which was won by Maindy Flyers’ Daisy Adams, while Wheal Velocity’s Henry Christie was first under-10 boy.

The under-eight winners were Exeter’s Monty Higgins and Taunton’s Martha Skene, while Dartmoor’s Thomas Medland was third boy.

In the senior men’s race, Tavistock Wheelers’ Lee Adams claimed second place behind Callum Orchard, with Tristan Davies third.

Plymouth Corinthian’s Philip Bray was fifth overall and first M40, with club team-mate Ben Causon sixth and second M40.

Wheal Velocity’s Oliver Riches won the junior men’s race, ahead of Mid-Devon’s Samuel Gray and Meryn Kitching.

Exeter’s Tim Carpenter was first M50, with Velo Club Venta’s Chris Hutchins winning the M60 category.

Heidi Gould, a F40 rider, was first female overall, with F50 competitor Miriam Whitehurst second and Plymouth Corinthian’s F40 rider Tracey Corcoran third and second in her category.
