PLYMOUTH Argyle secured their safety in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division with a final day 2-0 away victory at Welsh side Gwalia United.
The Pilgrims knew they just had to better Billericay Town’s result to move out of the bottom two on the final weekend. And they did just that as Billericay lost 4-0 away at AFC Wimbledon.
The first half in Wales was tense with neither side able to find the net.
Argyle’s nerves were not helped by Ellie Sara having a penalty saved in the 61st minute.
But four minutes later those nerves were settled when Lulu Jarvis rose at the far post to head in for the game’s opening goal.
And Argyle’s win was secured when Georgia Wilson netted a second three minutes from time.
Head coach James Bradley said afterwards: “We got the job done. It wasn’t the prettiest of performances. I think we’ve played better and not won in other games, but we got the job done and that was all we needed to do and focus on.
“I thought it was a really professional performance. The first 10 minutes were a bit cagey like you’d expect. I thought we became the dominant team over the game and that carried on until the final 10 minutes.”
Horrabridge Rangers maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Devon Women’s League South & West Division with a hard-earned 2-0 away victory at Shaldon Villa. Leesa Grainger and Kerry Gibbings scored Rangers’ goals in south Devon.
Elm United stay in second place after they beat Tavistock 7-1. Crystal-Mae Pollock netted a hat-trick for Elm, with Charlotte Rex and Maisie Godfrey both bagging two.
SB Oak Villa remain in third place after they overcame Paignton Villa 2-0 at Devonport High School for Boys, while Lakeside Athletic lost 3-2 at home to Plainmoor. Angel Goucher and Lily Daw scored for Lakeside.
In the Cornwall Women’s League, Saltash Borough were beaten 1-0 away at St Dennis on Sunday, just four days after drawing 1-1 away at Bodmin in midweek.
